Why We IGC: Veronica E. Connor Middle School

Each month leading up to IGC 2024, we are highlighting the educators and schools that have been instrumental in inspiring and motivating their students to support clean water projects in South Sudan. Next up is another long-time supporter, Veronica E. Connor Middle School and Lora Randles!

Veronica E. Connor Middle School has participated in the Iron Giraffe Challenge since the 2014-2015 school year. As a result, they have raised over $16,000.

Mrs. Randles shared, “A Long Walk to Water is such a powerful story. It leaves the reader wanting to do more. We started the Walk for Water the first year we read it. It's turned into an annual event at our school.”

“Each student is given a large manila envelope with a pledge sheet attached. They ask for donations. We give out t-shirts and hats and prizes.”

Salva’s story, and the composite character of Nya, show American children how other lives are in the world. It makes us appreciate the water we have access to, and seeing a well built is such motivation for following years.
— Lora Randles
