Why We IGC: Greece Athena Middle School

Each month leading up to IGC 2024, we are highlighting the educators and schools that have been instrumental in inspiring and motivating their students to support clean water projects in South Sudan.

First up is Greece Central School District and 7th Grade English Language Arts Teacher Vicki Richardson! Fun fact: Greece Athena Middle School has been involved since the very first Iron Giraffe Challenge 10 years ago, as this year also marks their 10th year of participation. We are proud of the ingenuity and creativity of these students portrayed back then.

Vicki shares, “After reading A Long Walk to Water, we knew we wanted to do something to help Salva in his mission to change people's lives. What an incredible opportunity to actually be able to make a difference and do a little bit in our small corner of the world.”

Greece Athena Middle School has fundraised in many ways over the years, including community garage sales, penny drives, pajama and hat days, and Walks for Water.

IGC has shown my students that they are powerful. That a small group of middle school kids can have a major impact on people on the other side of the world. That we can see something unfair, upsetting, and disturbing and DO SOMETHING about it.
— Vicki Richardson

We are so inspired by Vicki and the entire Greece Athena School Family. Thank you and your students for sharing your time, passion, creativity, and dedication to making a difference in South Sudan.
