Staff Spotlight: Joshua Idris, Intern

This month we’re featuring one of our Water for South Sudan interns, Joshua Idris. Read on to meet Joshua and learn more about his work at our compound in Wau, South Sudan!

1. Tell us about yourself! How old are you? Do you have siblings? Tell us about your family, etc.

My name is Joshua Idris Nalos. I’m a young South Sudanese Diplomat who has acquired skills in public management, international relations, and the peace-building field. I am pursuing a professional career in international relations and diplomacy. I recently graduated from New Generation University College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and where I have earned a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies and International Relations (GSIR). I am 25 years old. I am a Christian and I have 5 siblings. There are eight members in my family.

2. Where did you grow up?

I was born in Juba, South Sudan, in the Hai-Malakal area, but I grew up and raised in Khartoum which is the capital city of Sudan.

3.   When did you start interning with WFSS? How did you hear about the organization?

I started interning with WFSS on March, 15th 2021. I heard about the organization through the South Sudan NGO Forum. Before I was called for an interview, I was shocked to hear that WFSS existed- I never knew the organization was located here in Wau because other organizations usually are based in Juba. 

4. Tell us what you do in your current position as an intern.

My responsibilities and duties during my training/internship program are as follows;

(a) Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Entering well data in our database using Excel

  • Verifying documents

  • Writing proposals using Microsoft Word

  • Writing reports

  • Emailing and uploading photos to donors

  • Writing pump testing reports

  (b) Logistics

  • Issuing requests from the field employees from the warehouse, and also cash requests form.

  •  Receiving goods from the airport

    (c) Procurement

      • Purchasing items at the market for field workers

      • Supplying fuel for trucks

      • Releasing items from the warehouse and making sure they get to the field officers  

5. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I am very grateful to have such a variety of duties at this internship. I learned a lot during all these months and got to do a variety of tasks and I can now say I'm well qualified to do any job. 

6. What is the hardest part of the job?

The pressure in emergency situations.  

7. What are your plans for the future?

After completing my training, I would like WFSS to give me an opportunity where I can really grow my career. I would love to be based in the Juba office to help create relationships with other NGO partners and to attending meetings to market our office while lobbying for donors. I am knowledgeable about computers, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet, etc. I possess outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work efficiently as part of a team, but I can also stay focused and get the job well done when working independently. I always maintain integrity and treat clients and associates with the utmost respect in order to help build a strong working relationship that helps to create a positive image of WFSS.

8. What do you like to do for fun?

           • read history books and the Bible

           • travel

           • play sports 

           • write

           • swim

           • socialize

           • keeping old friends close as I make new ones

           • listening and telling life stories
