Partner Project Update: Transform South Sudan

A Life-Changing Partnership: WFSS & TSS Join Forces

This spring, WFSS and Transform South Sudan (TSS) partnered to bring safe, clean drinking water to communities in Gogrial East County, South Sudan. Thanks to generous supporters and TSS, 10 new wells were drilled, bringing life-saving water access to approximately 5,000 people.

In rural South Sudan, access to clean water is life-changing. Without it, families rely on contaminated water sources, which can lead to severe health issues. This project aimed at alleviating the overwhelming number of patients with waterborne illnesses visiting TSS's health clinic through the following initiatives:

  • Providing clean, safe water to communities in great need

  • Training local water committees on safe practices to ensure the wells are cared for and maintained

  • Fostering local ownership so that the water source is available for years to come.

Bringing Water to Life: Drilling 10 New Wells

Before project implementation, WFSS assessed 10 proposed well sites identified by local leaders based on need. WFSS team members conducted geological surveys to identify underground water sources. As with all of WFSS's projects, community members played a vital role in helping to make final decisions on well sites and ensuring the ground was prepared for drilling by removing brush and digging pits for drilling.

In addition to drilling 10 new wells, seven local residents from each community were selected to participate in Water Management Committee training sessions. These committee members received training on well management and safe hygiene practices. Hygiene education covered the following topics:

  • Safe storage of water

  • Handwashing and safe personal hygiene practices

  • Safe waste disposal and environmental hygiene

Water quality testing was performed on all 10 wells and we are proud to share that every well passed ensuring the new water source is providing water that is safe and healthy for consumption.

Thanks to this successful partnership and the many supporters who made the project possible, thousands of individuals in Gogrial East County no longer need to access unsafe water sources. They now have renewed hope for the future.

The Impact: Nyoric Village

For instance, in the village of Nyoric, families once relied on dangerous, hand-dug wells for water. These makeshift wells—some as deep as 12 meters—often collapsed, and strong winds frequently carried waste into the water, contaminating the community’s only water source.

Nyibol, a community resident, vividly remembers the fear and hardship her village endured: “We worried our children would fall into the wells. Sometimes, we would walk up to three hours to reach a clean water source.”

Everything changed when WFSS, in partnership with TSS and our generous supporters, arrived to drill a new well. Today, the people of Nyoric have access to clean, safe water—right in their village.

This well is more than a water source—it’s a foundation for health, safety, and renewed hope. None of this would be possible without your continued support. Thank you for helping transform lives in South Sudan, one well at a time.

Looking Ahead: Clean Water for Every Community

As we reflect on the success in Gogrial East County, we are reminded that clean water is more than a resource — it is the foundation for healthier communities, empowered families, and lasting change. Our partnership with TSS demonstrates the powerful impact that collaboration and community-centered solutions can achieve.

But this is just the beginning.

With continued support, we can reach even more communities still waiting for safe water. Together, we can ensure that no family has to choose between thirst and the risk of disease.

To all who made this possible — thank you. Your generosity is not just changing lives. It is saving them.

Join us as we continue this life-changing work. The need is great, but so is the power of collective action.
