The new nation of South Sudan is experiencing rapid change and development. Water for South Sudan, Inc., is also evolving to strengthen our ability to accomplish our mission of empowering the people of South Sudan's remote villages. Our founder and current president Salva Dut is overseeing operations for this year's drilling season. Beginning in September 2012, he will assume new leadership responsibilties as the organization’s Executive Director for East Africa Operations. He will continue reporting to the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee.

Salva's new role will focus on building and maintaining critical working relationships with Government of South Sudan agencies and departments, as well as national and international Non-Governmental Organizations in South Sudan. In addition, he will oversee WFSS's banking and supplies relationships as well as supervise, hire and train employees in South Sudan. He will be based in Wau, South Sudan and Kampala, Uganda, where WFSS has its banking and supplies relationships.

Salva will travel to the US annually, to meet with the WFSS board of directors and to participate in fundraising and development. This new role enables Salva and Water for South Sudan, Inc. to deepen the organization's commitment to transforming lives of those South Sudanese most in need.

WFSS and friends celebrated South Sudan's Independence in Rochester, NY.

On July 9th, 2011, the long struggle of the Southern Sudanese people for independence ended as the Republic of South Sudan was born.

In August, 2011 the Board of Directors of Water for Sudan, Inc. voted to change the organization’s name to Water for South Sudan, Inc. (WFSS). The new name more accurately reflects our organization’s area of operations and removes any doubt about us operating in Sudan, the new Republic’s northern neighbor.

To reflect this change, we’re updating our logo, website and other communications. This transition will take time, so our current website, www.waterforsudan.org will remain operational and then automatically redirect visitors to the new website when it is up and running.

Thank you for your support as Water for South Sudan continues our mission of transforming lives by drilling water wells in South Sudan’s remote villages.

Turner, Jr. our Chief Operating Officer, passed away. John was an integral part of our success, contributing countless hours to overcoming the many challenges of drilling in South Sudan. John was Salva’s right hand man for many years, working through any and all obstacles that came his way. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on, in all the wells in South Sudan that his contributions helped to build.

John retired from the Navy after 12 years of service with the rank of lieutenant. He later became the owner of Cricket on the Hearth, operating several stores in the Rochester, NY area. He was also a passionate and dedicated Rotarian for over 50 years. But it was in his retirement that he found his last mission. Through Rotary John met Salva Dut. Salva had recently begun his quest to bring clean water to the people of South Sudan. John too became a fervent advocate and joined the board of directors of Water for South Sudan, Inc. in 2006. The following year he was appointed Chief Operating Officer.

WFSS Board chair Chris Moore said, "John's dedication to Water for South Sudan was unparalleled. His love of Salva's work and for Salva himself ran deep and will sustain both for many, many years to come. Thank you, John, from the bottom of my heart! Yours is an example we should all strive to emulate."

Salva just spent a month in the US for some meetings (related story below) and brought us news of this season’s drilling. The political situation in South Sudan overshadowed the drilling this year, but our crews were still able to accomplish a tremendous amount. The teams have drilled 28 wells, ending just as the rainy season began. While the WFS crews were never in danger, they did need to wait for several weeks after the January 9 referendum, in which South Sudan voted overwhelming to become independent from Northern Sudan, to be certain they could drill safely. As a precaution, the crews only operated one rig so that they could be together and ready to evacuate if any danger arose.

Salva told the WFS board that, “I was worried so much this year about the January voting for South Sudan separation. Luckily no violence happened in the area where we were drilling. The mood for Southerners was very good toward separation from the North. The vote was 98 percent for South Sudan separation.”

Thanks as well to the continued dedication of WFS COO John Turner and Vice COO Bob Smith for their work in the US supporting WFS African Operations. And, as always, Salva and all of us at Water for Sudan are deeply grateful to all of our supporters for enabling us to have another successful drilling season.

A Quick Look at Water for Sudan, Inc.

Water for Sudan, Inc. is a US not-for-profit corporation under section 501(c) 3 of the IRS code. It is based in Rochester, NY and operates in South Sudan.

Water for Sudan, Inc. was founded in 2003 by former “Lost Boy” Salva Dut and a dedicated group of people who became the WFS Board of Directors. In 2005 WFS began the drilling work that brings safe, fresh water to the people of South Sudan’s remote villages. To date, in just six years 104 wells have been drilled, transforming the lives of thousands of Southern Sudanese, particularly women and girls, in one of the world’s poorest countries.

WFS does this work with a comparatively small budget and dedicated professionals who volunteer their time and expertise. We are able to direct 83% of our funds to direct African drilling expenses. That means that the administrative/management portion of our budget, including fundraising, is just 17%. According to non-profit professionals, such financial management is an amazing feat for any organization, particularly a small one with a limited staff and so dependent on volunteers and donations.

WFS is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and financially supported by thousands of individuals, many civic associations, religious congregations, schools, corporations, and foundations enabling this humanitarian work.

Working in South Sudan requires much planning. It is an extremely challenging physical and political environment in which to operate. In addition, like other non-profit organizations in that country, WFS must be registered with the following entities:

U.S. Department of the Treasury to conduct humanitarian activities in Sudan including the transfer of funds (Reg. No. SH-98179);

Republic of Sudan Government Southern Sudan (GOSS) – Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission; and

Government of Southern Sudan Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development.

In addition, WFS is currently registering with the new Government of South Sudan Ministry of Rural Water.

Copies of our IRS letter of determination, all Government certifications, the latest Water for Sudan, Inc. Form 990 and financial statements are posted here. Water for Sudan, Inc. is also listed in Guidestar, a database of 1.8 million IRS-Recognized Nonprofits. A full report on Water for Sudan, Inc. can be found here.

In a story about the referendum on January 9th, 2011 PBS Need to Know featured Salva Dut and Water for Sudan. From the PBS Need to Know website:

"On Sunday, the people of Southern Sudan will begin voting on whether to remain part of a unified Sudan or become an independent state. Sudan, Africa’s largest nation, is an oil-rich country run by Islamist Arabs. What happens there matters to all of us for strategic and humanitarian reasons. Here’s what you need to know:

"For generations, southern Sudan has been dominated by the Islamist-run government in Khartoum, which has sought to impose Sharia law on the south’s Christians and animists.

"Religion is one of the main causes of two bloody civil wars that have killed two million southern Sudanese. Another point of contention: control of Sudan’s oil reserves that lie mostly in the south and along the border with the north. If, as expected, the south votes to secede, many fear another wave of violence, despite assurances from Sudan’s president, Omar al Bashir, that he will accept the results of the election: 'If the south secedes, we will welcome it.'

"But can Bashir be trusted? He has been indicted as a war criminal for his brutal military campaign against rebels and civilians in Darfur. That fighting, which began in 2003, has left 300,000 dead. Need to Know sent producer George Lerner to southern Sudan to report on one former refugee’s efforts to help rebuild his homeland in anticipation of a vote for independence."

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.waterforsouthsudan.org/news/2010/12/23/201011-drilling-season-starts.html"><rss:title>2010/11 Drilling Season Starts</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.waterforsouthsudan.org/news/2010/12/23/201011-drilling-season-starts.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Three Wells Already Completed!

While we are busy wrapping up the year here, Salva and his crews have been busy drilling near Wau in Southern Sudan. Thanks to our donors and supporters, they have already completed three wells as of December 27th and are ready to start a fourth!

Salva left for Africa at the end of September to begin preparations. Team A Manager Ater Thiep left Texas for Sudan in early November. It takes a lot to prepare for a new drilling season — checking all of our equipment, buying all supplies needed and then transporting everything. Crossing the border from Uganda into Sudan was a challenge this fall. But all is in place now and Salva and crews are on their way to another successful drilling season.

Since arriving in Sudan earlier this fall, Salva has been traveling to gather supplies, making assessments, which is the process of figuring out where wells will be drilled, and planning the 2011 drilling season. Ater Thiep, Team A Drilling Manager, left the US in early November to join Salva.

Salva attended a Rotary meeting in Juba in November. Water for Sudan is pursuing Rotary grants from Rotary International and the Juba club is helping sponsor one. Rotary continues to be a major supporter of our efforts. Water for Sudan will receive $32,000 from a group of four CA Rotary groups this drilling season.

Volunteer Peg Dawson Receives Award

Peg Dawson has been the chief office volunteer for Water for Sudan for almost two years, logging in nearly 300 hours to keep the office running smoothly. Christopher Moore, chair of the Board, said, in presenting Peg a gift, "Peg has brought the office from confusion to order. Her contribution to Water for Sudan is immeasurable. Thank you."

The growth of Water for Sudan has made it clear that replacing Peg Dawson would best be accomplished by hiring its first US-based paid staff, and a part time position was created.

Lynn Malooly Joins WFS as Office Administrator

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of supporters, this year’s Water for Sudan drilling season in Southern Sudan was the most productive to date. Water for Sudan's mission continues to be drilling wells in remote villages, but this year we added another dimension to our work.

Water for Sudan collaborated with the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to help speed the return of thousands of Sudanese refugees to Southern Sudan from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Northern Sudan. Our teams drilled in locations mutually chosen by GoSS, village elders, and Salva. GoSS-funded construction of housing and schools for returnees followed the wells we drilled. UNICEF and Doctors without Borders will soon build clinics in some of these locations.

Update from Board Chair Christopher Moore

At the June Board meeting, Christopher Moore shared his recent experience and learning from attending The American Friends of the Episcopal Church of Sudan (AFRECS) Annual Conference June 4 to 6, 2010 in Alexandria, Virginia. The conference focused on the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and prospects for peace in Sudan. One of the speakers was Alan Goulty, the UK’s Ambassador to Sudan from 1995 to 1999, and the UK’s Special Representative for Sudan from 2002 to 2004.

Sudanese supporters of the south's SPLM party wave the southern flag during tensions before April's elections © Peter Martell/IRINMoore reviewed some of the main challenges of preparing for the January 2011 referendum when Southern Sudanese will vote on whether to remain part of Sudan or become the world’s newest nation. Issues presented and discussed included — how is eligibility to register to vote being determined; are Sudanese-Americans eligible; are Southern Sudanese living in Northern Sudan eligible? What about those in refugee camps in other countries?

Moore described the potential for the Khartoum government in northern Sudan to reject referendum results as invalid if these issues are not completely resolved in advance of the referendum. He also noted the potential for unrest should the referendum not go smoothly and the results not be recognized.

It is widely expected by authorities on Sudan that Southern Sudanese will vote for independence by a margin of six to one. The CPA specifies a six month transition period after the referendum until independence actually occurs. Water for Sudan will be closely monitoring the political situation in the months ahead and preparing for the referendum outcome and transition. According to Moore, “The safety of Water for Sudan’s crew, equipment, and our donors' investment is paramount. The 2011 drilling season is not written in stone. If we are drilling and something happens we will be prepared to move out, as far as Uganda if necessary.”

“What you are doing is incredible."

During the AFRECS conference, Moore met with Gary Imhoff, a Director from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Imhoff told Moore, “What you are doing is incredible. There are very few organizations that have been able to accomplish what you’ve done.” Moore thanked him and replied, “We want to do more. How can we become more effective?”

The USAID Director said to seek out partnerships with other like organizations and make proposals for joint projects — such as water, sanitation, schools, and medical clinics. With Water for Sudan leading, the proposals have a very good chance of being funded, Imhoff said. Creating these partnerships and joint proposals will be a major focus starting now for Moore and the WFS Board.
