We are pleased to announce that Columbia Intermediate School in Kings Mills OH was the first school to raise $25,000 in our Super Challenge and they won a visit by WFSS Founder Salva Dut on March 29, 2016. Congratulations to Columbia Intermediate and the entire Kings Local School District and community for your support. Special thanks to Ethicon, a Johnson and Johnson company, for also supporting Columbia in their quest to win the Super Challenge.
Stay tuned for details on next year's Iron Giraffe Challenge!
As demonstrated in the story A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, even the poorest children in America and other developed nations have incredible wealth compared to South Sudanese children. Enlist the help of your students in helping bring clean water to children and families in South Sudan.
Water for South Sudan drills water wells in South Sudan, the world's newest nation. As of May 2016, we have drilled 282 wells, serving hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese. The difficulty of drilling wells in the remote villages of South Sudan is that in many places there are no roads – sometimes even dirt roads do not exist. This puts a tremendous strain on our vehicles, causing frequent breakdowns. Our drilling rig—the Iron Giraffe— is about eight years old and on its last legs. In order to continue our work, it is critical that we buy a new Iron Giraffe at a cost of about $500,000.
Salva Dut, WFSS Founder and Executive Director in East Africa, has issued a new Iron Giraffe Challenge. Salva hopes that schools will help us get our new Iron Giraffe by each raising a minimum of $1,000 this year. Each school that completes the challenge, raising at least $1,000 by April 1, 2016, will get one entry in the Iron Giraffe Challenge drawing for the following prizes:
· First Prize: A visit to your school with Salva Dut*
· Second Prize: A visit to your school with Linda Sue Park *
· Third Prizes: A 20-minute Skype call with Salva Dut* (we will award three 3rd prizes)
Increase your chances of winning! Schools that enlist other schools in the challenge will get an additional entry in the drawing— one for each referred school that completes the challenge by the April 1, 2016 deadline. See pledge form for details.
*Visits and Skype calls subject to Salva Dut and Linda Sue Park’s availability. WFSS reserves the right to cancel visits if Salva or Linda Sue are unable to fulfill the commitment for any reason, such as illness, unrest in South Sudan, etc. We will make every effort to provide a Skype call if an in-person visit is not possible. Each school will be eligible for only one visit or Skype call with Salva or Linda Sue.
*Visits and Skype calls subject to Salva Dut and Linda Sue Park’s availability which will require flexibility given Salva’s South Sudan location and Linda Sue’s travel schedule.
